MD, PhD-student
Rutger Koning

Rutger Koning attended medical school at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. For his scientific internship he performed experimental research exploring a new treatment for multiple sclerosis in Montreal, Canada. After graduating from medical school he worked as a resident in neurology in the Flevoziekenhuis in Almere. In October 2019 he started as PhD student at the Neuroinfections Amsterdam research group where he works on pneumococcal meningitis. His research focusses on understanding how genetic variation of both patients and the bacteria that infect them can influence outcomes in meningitis. Knowledge into these mechanisms can lead to new treatments for meningitis.
