I-PACE study

I-PACE stands for: "Improving Prognosis by using innovative methods to diagnose Causes of Encephalitis".

In- en exclusioncriteria

Inclusion Criteria:

  • All patients aged 16 years or older with a suspected neurological infection (defined as undergoing any microbiological investigation) who undergo CSF examination

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Patients from the outpatient clinic. 
  • Neurosurgical procedures or neurotrauma with CSF leakage in the past 3 months.
  • Presence of a CSF drain or a neurostimulator in the central nervous system.

 

Practical procedures (I-PACE without additional sample collection):

  1. Inform the patient and/or representative.
  2. Download and print the consent form (see below).
  3. Have the patient and/or representative sign both consent forms and sign them yourself: one form is for the patient, one form is for the study file in the department.
  4. Email ipace@amsterdamumc.nl for a study number and note this on the consent form, or call the I-PACE phonenumber at 06-29695122.

Practical procedures (I-PACE with additional sample collection):

  1. Inform the patient and/or representative.
  2. Download and print the consent form (see below).
  3. Have the patient and/or representative sign both consent forms and sign them yourself: one form is for the patient, one form is for the study file in the department.
  4. Pick up a study kit from the residents' room/ER and note the study number on it on the consent form. Also email this study number to ipace@amsterdamumc.nl, or call the I-PACE phonenumber at 06-29695122.
  5. Additional study collections: (Note: Always clearly mark the study number on the collected material)
    • Extra study tube of CSF: Only if prior consent is obtained from the patient or representative.
    • Blood: Only if collected within 48 hours after the lumbar puncture.
    • Throat and rectal swab: Only if collected within 48 hours after the lumbar puncture.
    • Note: Patients do not need to be excluded if not all (or no) additional study collections can be performed.
  6. Submit all collected study material with the completed sample guide letter to the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory.
