Scientific research

The Department of Neurology at Amsterdam UMC has a rich history in researching neurological infectious diseases. In recent years, the group has significantly expanded after receiving national and European grants. The current research lines include bacterial meningitis (MeninGene and SMS MeninGene studies), suspected infectious meningitis or encephalitis in children and adults (I-PACE and I-PACE Kids studies), neonatal meningitis (NOGBS study), and oral antibiotics for brain abscesses (ORAL study). Since 2025, research towards spontaneous intracranial hypotension has commenced (LEAK biobank). Other areas of our scientific interest include infections in patients with cerebrospinal fluid drains, the immunological response after a stroke, and the role of autoantibodies in meningitis and encephalitis.
