Diederik van de Beek
Diederik van de Beek is a neurologist with special expertise in neurological infectious diseases and the group leader of the neurological infectious diseases research group at the Amsterdam UMC. He completed his medical training at the University of Amsterdam and obtained his PhD at the same university in 2004 with a dissertation entitled "Bacterial meningitis in adults." After completing his neurology training in Amsterdam, he worked as a researcher at the American Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. Subsequently, he secured multiple grants from the Nederlandse organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) and the European Research Council (ERC) to continue his research on bacterial meningitis at the Amsterdam UMC. Through translational, bench-to-bedside research, Van de Beek unravels the causes and consequences of neurological infectious diseases with the aim of developing new therapies. His research focuses on meningitis, post-stroke infections, and delirium in sepsis. Van de Beek has numerous publications in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, and Journal of Clinical Investigation.
